18 Dec 2020: A Christmas Carol
An amazing online panto experience. So much fun and so different. We didn't sell tickets but rather asked for donations to help the PCC look after the hall AND we continued our run of pantos. We streamed a live zoom session to youtube (See it here) to an audience of 240 on the night and by New Year the show had been seen 1,237 times! Wow.

Recently-widowed Beth is looking forward to a quiet Christmas, but her son Martin and sister-in-law Connie have other ideas. Martin tries to manage Beth like his father did, and Connie dives into the red wine. The cat has gone missing, Martin’s girlfriend is willfully mute, and the vicar inadvertently conjures up the ghost of her late husband. Hardly a recipe for a happy Christmas. “I chose this play because I was drawn to the quiet humour, and to Beth’s discovery of her own strength and the charms of independence. The provenance of the ghost (ghosts?) and the fate of Wagstaff have proved fruitful grounds for discussion.” – Bryony Wilman, Director

23 and 26 Mar 2020: Summer Play Audition
We're putting on "The Birds" by Conor MacPherson and yes it is the same story upon which the film was based; see below for more story details. No audition preparation needed, simply arrive and head to the back room, quietly as Life and Beth will be rehearsing, and we'll take it from there. This show will be performed here and then later in Edinburgh. Participants are expected to be available for both productions.

"In the Next Room" by Sarah Ruhl or the vibrator play is a comedy about marriage, intimacy, and electricity. Set in the 1880s at the dawn of the age of electricity and based on the bizarre historical fact that doctors used vibrators to treat 'hysterical' women (and some men), the play centers on a doctor and his wife and how his new therapy affects their entire household. The Birds is a claustrophobic psychodrama based, like Hitchcock’s film, on a short story by Daphne du Maurier, about a world in which birds turn on humans. Two strangers are trapped together in an abandoned house, trying to survive. As a relationship between them begins to develop, a young woman turns up and disrupts the delicate balance. In a post-apocalyptic world, your survival may mean someone else’s death.
Conor MacPherson is a brilliant writer, famous for The Weir and The Girl From The North Country (currently in the West End).
The play calls for 2M, 1F, all middle-aged and 1F mid-twenties

Another Ben Crocker, our 21st panto and an epic panto too. We lost the Thursday show for a general election and achieved as emphatic a result too. Our first standing ovation for a panto - how amazing was that? How to improve on that?

In 1799 there are scientific experiments, furtive romance and farcical amateur dramatics; in 1999, there are questions raised by genetic engineering, and a disturbing discovery in the cellar.

After looking at various possibilities, we settled on the first play we looked at, “An Experiment with An Air Pump” by Shelagh Stephenson, to be directed by Bryony Wilman. Production dates are 16-19 October

3-6 April 2019: Spring Production: “Colder than Here” by Laura Wade
A BLACK COMEDY ABOUT LIFE, DEATH AND NOT COPING VERY WELL WITH EITHER
Join us this April for the first production of our 70th year - Laura Wade's beautifully poised intimate family drama Colder Than Here. First performed at the Soho Theatre, London, in 2005, Wade’s original and beautifully observed play balances raw emotion with a deliciously delicate black humour.
Nobody can ignore the fact that Myra is dying, but in the meantime, life goes on. There are boilers to be fixed, cats to be fed and the perfect funeral to be planned. As a mother researches burial spots and biodegradable coffins, her family are finally forced to communicate with her, and each other, as they face up to an unpredictable future.

Yet more panto fun and another title we've not done before. Ben Crocker provides the script and Jane is directing us this year and the band returns with an extra guitar. Sounds excellent.
8-9 Nov 2018: My Darling Boy
To mark the centenary of the end of WW1 St Michael’s Church; in association with St Michael’s Players, are delighted to be presenting My Darling Boy – A One Act play by Rev Martine Oborne. We previously performed this four years ago, and this very special production will be performed over two nights at the beginning of November in St Michael’s Church, Elmwood Road, Chiswick.
Rev Martine Oborne shares her inspiration and the plays’ important message: “Just before the centenary of the start of the First World War, I began to reflect on the words the I say at Remembrance services every November – Binyon's words – At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. It suddenly struck me that we could not remember the thirty-three men listed on our church monument that lost their lives in WW1; because we knew nothing about their stories. So, we applied for some funding from The Heritage Lottery Fund and set about recapturing these stories. After about a year of work, we had traced descendants, poured over archives and unearthed all kinds of artefacts - from cigarette boxes to letters to fading photographs. We put all this together to produce an exhibition and a book called 'Heroes of Chiswick.' But still I didn't feel this quite communicated the experience of the whole community of the parish in the war years - when sons, brothers and fathers were away and when so many lost their lives or suffered so dreadfully. So, I wrote the short play "My Darling Boy.”
10-13 Oct 2018: Spirit Level
Where do you go if you are dead but have been turned away from the Pearly Gates because you are an atheist? For Jack and Susie the choice is their weekend retreat in deepest Hampshire, where Jack, a successful author, wrote many of his novels. But the afterlife can be pretty dull if you can’t eat, sleep, make love etc, and they bicker as much as they probably did before they died in a boating accident.
Their only fun is frightening away any new occupants and winding up the pompous estate agent responsible for trying to let the cottage without revealing why previous tenants have tended to leave in a hurry. But then Flic and Simon, an unsuccessful author, come along, and Jack and Susie find themselves getting involved in the young couple’s lives. Throw in Flic’s ghastly mother and a harassed guardian angel and things get even more interesting.
It’s not exactly a battle between good and evil, but points are made about living vicariously, for both the quick and the dead, snobbery and selfishness. Directed by Bryony.

29-30 June 2018: The 39 Steps
Directed by Marc Pearce we have "The 39 Steps" by Joe Landry. Inspired by Hitchcock's classic tale and performed as a live period radio play, this romantic thriller is a fast-paced ride through the signature world of the Master of Suspense. Richard Hannay is visiting 1930s London when he meets Annabella Smith, who is on the run from foreign agents, after a disturbance at a music hall. Later that night, Annabella is murdered and Hannay must then try to break the spy ring and prove his innocence. From an epic train chase to a feisty love interest, Hannay has his work cut out for him as he searches for the truth about The 39 Steps.

We'll read our Autumn production, Spirit Level by Pam Valentine. We have read some of this before, but not the whole thing. Basically, it is a rather charming ghost story. We have performed a couple Pam Valentine’s plays before: A Dog’s Life and Alternative Accommodation. Venue is Sue's house and that is 202 Sutton Court Road. Bring friends and refreshments as required.

From the Telegraph's 2008 review we have "It concerns the random stabbing of an 18-year-old boy by a girl of the same age one night in a London shop while she was out of her head on drugs. She asked for a pound, he told her to eff off, and was knifed in the heart for his brusqueness.It's the kind of story one reads with scary regularity these days. The details are fictional, but the play, which focuses equally on both the killer and the family whose lives have been ruined by her action, is the product of careful research and has the satisfying smack of authenticity.
Stephenson spent many hours talking to victims and perpetrators of violent crime, visiting prisons and collaborating with the Forgiveness Project, a charity working in the fields of reconciliation and restorative justice. The result is an astonishingly raw and affecting play that is clearly intent on opening hearts and minds without ever becoming preachy. It has already toured to prisons, and seems to me a work that can do nothing but good.
Stephenson harrowingly shows how the victim's shattered family are mentally and emotionally stabbed over and over again by the loss of their son, and when the mother, who knows that her desire for revenge is corroding her from within, decides to meet her son's killer in jail, her husband is both incredulous and furious.
She persists anyway, and at first it all goes disastrously wrong. Gradually, painfully, tentative progress is made towards mutual understanding, but Stephenson never sentimentalises her tough subject matter and leaves little doubt about how hard full forgiveness is likely to prove. As the play title insists, it's a long road."

Panto comes to Chiswickia once again. Morgan le Fay kidnaps Genevieve and it's up to Sir Laughalot, King Arthur, Merlin and assorted panto people to rescue her from a fate worse than a knight in Actonia. With invisible knights, ghosts, magic, talking snakes, magic potions and haunted bedrooms, this is another show not to be missed. More fun and games just like last year - only better!
27-30 Sept 2017: "Time and the Conways" by JB Priestley
Directed by the legendary Paul Smith and featuring St Michael's Players' top talent showing off as per usual. Great play with lots to think about.
The year is 1919, and Kay Conway is celebrating her 21st birthday with a party. She and the rest of her family are eagerly anticipating their futures, after the war, and all have high expectations of what they will become.
Nineteen years later, they are reunited in the family home in very different circumstances, to see what becomes of their pre-war plans and aspirations.
Returning to the same party of 1919, it becomes clear how they were all, unconsciously, shaping their individual and collective futures.
Through the lens of time, JB Priestley’s family drama explores the social and political history of England between the wars, and the class – ridden nature of society at the time. It contemplates the relationship between the past, present and future, and reflects on how people can unwittingly destroy themselves and others.

29 Mar-1 Apr 2017: Confusions by Alan Ayckbourn
Directed by Jane Atkinson. Confusions is actually a set of five interlinked one act plays: Mother Figure, Drinking Companion, Between Mouthfuls, Gosforth’s Fete and Talk in the Park, each play deals riotously, but with sharply pointed undertones, with human eccentricities and the human dilemma of loneliness; a mother unable to escape from baby talk, a disastrous fete, an unsuccessful seduction attempt, a fate fraught dinner encounter and the final play sums up with five self immolated characters on park benches.

The Ladykillers is a classic black comedy; a sweet little old lady, alone in her house, is pitted against a gang of criminal misfits who will stop at nothing to pull off the heist of their lives. Posing as amateur musicians, Professor Marcus and his criminal gang rent rooms in the lopsided house of the sweet but strict Mrs Wilberforce. The villains plot to involve her, unwittingly, in Marcus' brilliantly conceived heist job. Mrs Wilberforce becomes wise to their ruse and Marcus concludes that there is only one way to keep the old lady quiet. With only her parrot, General Gordon, Mrs Wilberforce is trapped alone with five desperate men. Who will be forced to face the music?

A brilliant distillation of William Thackeray's massive novel, satirising greed and social climbing in Regency England. The central character is Becky Sharp, a penniless orphan determined to grab any opportunity to improve her position. The play is fast-paced, with songs, humour, multi-tasking actors and action from London to India and onto Brussels on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo.

An amazing online panto experience. So much fun and so different. We didn't sell tickets but rather asked for donations to help the PCC look after the hall AND we continued our run of pantos. We streamed a live zoom session to youtube (See it here) to an audience of 240 on the night and by New Year the show had been seen 1,237 times! Wow.

Recently-widowed Beth is looking forward to a quiet Christmas, but her son Martin and sister-in-law Connie have other ideas. Martin tries to manage Beth like his father did, and Connie dives into the red wine. The cat has gone missing, Martin’s girlfriend is willfully mute, and the vicar inadvertently conjures up the ghost of her late husband. Hardly a recipe for a happy Christmas. “I chose this play because I was drawn to the quiet humour, and to Beth’s discovery of her own strength and the charms of independence. The provenance of the ghost (ghosts?) and the fate of Wagstaff have proved fruitful grounds for discussion.” – Bryony Wilman, Director

We're putting on "The Birds" by Conor MacPherson and yes it is the same story upon which the film was based; see below for more story details. No audition preparation needed, simply arrive and head to the back room, quietly as Life and Beth will be rehearsing, and we'll take it from there. "In the Next Room" by Sarah Ruhl or the vibrator play is a comedy about marriage, intimacy, and electricity. Set in the 1880s at the dawn of the age of electricity and based on the bizarre historical fact that doctors used vibrators to treat 'hysterical' women (and some men), the play centers on a doctor and his wife and how his new therapy affects their entire household. The Birds is a claustrophobic psychodrama based, like Hitchcock’s film, on a short story by Daphne du Maurier, about a world in which birds turn on humans. Two strangers are trapped together in an abandoned house, trying to survive. As a relationship between them begins to develop, a young woman turns up and disrupts the delicate balance. In a post-apocalyptic world, your survival may mean someone else’s death.
Conor MacPherson is a brilliant writer, famous for The Weir and The Girl From The North Country (currently in the West End).

After looking at various possibilities, we settled on the first play we looked at, “An Experiment with An Air Pump” by Shelagh Stephenson, to be directed by Bryony Wilman. Production dates are 16-19 October

3-6 April 2019: Spring Production: “Colder than Here” by Laura Wade
A BLACK COMEDY ABOUT LIFE, DEATH AND NOT COPING VERY WELL WITH EITHER
Join us this April for the first production of our 70th year - Laura Wade's beautifully poised intimate family drama Colder Than Here. First performed at the Soho Theatre, London, in 2005, Wade’s original and beautifully observed play balances raw emotion with a deliciously delicate black humour.
Nobody can ignore the fact that Myra is dying, but in the meantime, life goes on. There are boilers to be fixed, cats to be fed and the perfect funeral to be planned. As a mother researches burial spots and biodegradable coffins, her family are finally forced to communicate with her, and each other, as they face up to an unpredictable future.

8-9 Nov 2018: My Darling Boy
To mark the centenary of the end of WW1 St Michael’s Church; in association with St Michael’s Players, are delighted to be presenting My Darling Boy – A One Act play by Rev Martine Oborne. We previously performed this four years ago, and this very special production will be performed over two nights at the beginning of November in St Michael’s Church, Elmwood Road, Chiswick.
Rev Martine Oborne shares her inspiration and the plays’ important message: “Just before the centenary of the start of the First World War, I began to reflect on the words the I say at Remembrance services every November – Binyon's words – At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. It suddenly struck me that we could not remember the thirty-three men listed on our church monument that lost their lives in WW1; because we knew nothing about their stories. So, we applied for some funding from The Heritage Lottery Fund and set about recapturing these stories. After about a year of work, we had traced descendants, poured over archives and unearthed all kinds of artefacts - from cigarette boxes to letters to fading photographs. We put all this together to produce an exhibition and a book called 'Heroes of Chiswick.' But still I didn't feel this quite communicated the experience of the whole community of the parish in the war years - when sons, brothers and fathers were away and when so many lost their lives or suffered so dreadfully. So, I wrote the short play "My Darling Boy.”
10-13 Oct 2018: Spirit Level
Where do you go if you are dead but have been turned away from the Pearly Gates because you are an atheist? For Jack and Susie the choice is their weekend retreat in deepest Hampshire, where Jack, a successful author, wrote many of his novels. But the afterlife can be pretty dull if you can’t eat, sleep, make love etc, and they bicker as much as they probably did before they died in a boating accident.
Their only fun is frightening away any new occupants and winding up the pompous estate agent responsible for trying to let the cottage without revealing why previous tenants have tended to leave in a hurry. But then Flic and Simon, an unsuccessful author, come along, and Jack and Susie find themselves getting involved in the young couple’s lives. Throw in Flic’s ghastly mother and a harassed guardian angel and things get even more interesting.
It’s not exactly a battle between good and evil, but points are made about living vicariously, for both the quick and the dead, snobbery and selfishness. Directed by Bryony.

Directed by Marc Pearce we have "The 39 Steps" by Joe Landry. Inspired by Hitchcock's classic tale and performed as a live period radio play, this romantic thriller is a fast-paced ride through the signature world of the Master of Suspense. Richard Hannay is visiting 1930s London when he meets Annabella Smith, who is on the run from foreign agents, after a disturbance at a music hall. Later that night, Annabella is murdered and Hannay must then try to break the spy ring and prove his innocence. From an epic train chase to a feisty love interest, Hannay has his work cut out for him as he searches for the truth about The 39 Steps.

From the Telegraph's 2008 review we have "It concerns the random stabbing of an 18-year-old boy by a girl of the same age one night in a London shop while she was out of her head on drugs. She asked for a pound, he told her to eff off, and was knifed in the heart for his brusqueness.It's the kind of story one reads with scary regularity these days. The details are fictional, but the play, which focuses equally on both the killer and the family whose lives have been ruined by her action, is the product of careful research and has the satisfying smack of authenticity.
Stephenson spent many hours talking to victims and perpetrators of violent crime, visiting prisons and collaborating with the Forgiveness Project, a charity working in the fields of reconciliation and restorative justice. The result is an astonishingly raw and affecting play that is clearly intent on opening hearts and minds without ever becoming preachy. It has already toured to prisons, and seems to me a work that can do nothing but good.
Stephenson harrowingly shows how the victim's shattered family are mentally and emotionally stabbed over and over again by the loss of their son, and when the mother, who knows that her desire for revenge is corroding her from within, decides to meet her son's killer in jail, her husband is both incredulous and furious.
She persists anyway, and at first it all goes disastrously wrong. Gradually, painfully, tentative progress is made towards mutual understanding, but Stephenson never sentimentalises her tough subject matter and leaves little doubt about how hard full forgiveness is likely to prove. As the play title insists, it's a long road."

6-9 Dec 2017: "Camelot the Panto" by Ben Crocker
Panto comes to Chiswickia once again. Morgan le Fay kidnaps Genevieve and it's up to Sir Laughalot, King Arthur, Merlin and assorted panto people to rescue her from a fate worse than a knight in Actonia. With invisible knights, ghosts, magic, talking snakes, magic potions and haunted bedrooms, this is another show not to be missed. More fun and games just like last year - only better!
27-30 Sept 2017: "Time and the Conways" by JB Priestley
Directed by the legendary Paul Smith and featuring St Michael's Players' top talent showing off as per usual. Great play with lots to think about.
The year is 1919, and Kay Conway is celebrating her 21st birthday with a party. She and the rest of her family are eagerly anticipating their futures, after the war, and all have high expectations of what they will become.
Nineteen years later, they are reunited in the family home in very different circumstances, to see what becomes of their pre-war plans and aspirations.
Returning to the same party of 1919, it becomes clear how they were all, unconsciously, shaping their individual and collective futures.
Through the lens of time, JB Priestley’s family drama explores the social and political history of England between the wars, and the class – ridden nature of society at the time. It contemplates the relationship between the past, present and future, and reflects on how people can unwittingly destroy themselves and others.

All round to Utku this time to read our Autumn Play; "Time and the Conways". Another cracking play and a good turnout too although the spelling on show in the garden was a tad unexpected. Tch kids of today, eh? So that's the Autumn play sorted and how good it is too although we'll be needing some snappy set changes. Can't wait for this one.

29 Mar-1 Apr 2017: Confusions by Alan Ayckbourn
Directed by Jane Atkinson. Confusions is actually a set of five interlinked one act plays: Mother Figure, Drinking Companion, Between Mouthfuls, Gosforth’s Fete and Talk in the Park, each play deals riotously, but with sharply pointed undertones, with human eccentricities and the human dilemma of loneliness; a mother unable to escape from baby talk, a disastrous fete, an unsuccessful seduction attempt, a fate fraught dinner encounter and the final play sums up with five self immolated characters on park benches.

Good turn out of 26 and a fine time was had by all. Oxtail and dumplings, fish pie and a vegetarian curry. All fab.

The Ladykillers is a classic black comedy; a sweet little old lady, alone in her house, is pitted against a gang of criminal misfits who will stop at nothing to pull off the heist of their lives. Posing as amateur musicians, Professor Marcus and his criminal gang rent rooms in the lopsided house of the sweet but strict Mrs Wilberforce. The villains plot to involve her, unwittingly, in Marcus' brilliantly conceived heist job. Mrs Wilberforce becomes wise to their ruse and Marcus concludes that there is only one way to keep the old lady quiet. With only her parrot, General Gordon, Mrs Wilberforce is trapped alone with five desperate men. Who will be forced to face the music?

A brilliant distillation of William Thackeray's massive novel, satirising greed and social climbing in Regency England. The central character is Becky Sharp, a penniless orphan determined to grab any opportunity to improve her position. The play is fast-paced, with songs, humour, multi-tasking actors and action from London to India and onto Brussels on the eve of the Battle of Waterloo.

Another world-famous panto from the team at St Michael's. This year's hottest ticket in London, no in the UK. Ali Baba tries to win Safiya's heart while avoiding the murderous Mustafa Leikh and his horde of 40 thieves. Plenty of panto merriment for all.

St Michael's ventures outdoors with our first ever Shakespeare play, in sixty five years. The venue is the lovely gardens of St Paul's church on Hartington Road and it's a picnic on a blanket or bring chairs to join the dress circle. Tickets now available.

29 March 2015: Shakespeare Workshop
For anyone who’s never acted in a Shakespeare play before and might feel a tad uncertain about it, or for those who have and who love it - this workshop is a must. It will blow away any fears and whet your appetite for our summer production of Midsummer's Night Dream. Under the guidance of Yvonne Morley, highly acclaimed voice teacher and vocal coach and until recently Head of Voice at LAMDA, you will take a fresh look at working with Shakespeare texts and have fun in the process. All welcome!
