THE PLAY
Four stalwarts of a women's reading group, plus one newcomer, meet to choose their next book. This proves even harder than usual, and the evening becomes one of confessions and suspicions. THE AUTHOR Fay Weldon was born Franklin Birkinshaw in either 1931 or 1933. She spent her early years in New Zealand, but returned to the UK in her teens. By the time she produced her first novel in 1967, she had already written prolifically for radio, stage and television. She has been married three times; aspects of her split from her second husband are said to be reflected in The Reading Group. When working as a copywriter, she coined the famed slogan "Go to work on an egg"; her proposal to advertise vodka with the phrase "Vodka gets you drunker quicker", for some reason failed to find favour with her bosses and was rejected. |
