ALL THAT FALL
Beckett conceived All That Fall as a radio play. To Beckett’s mind it was unthinkable to transfer it to another medium. When Ingmar Bergman, asked if he could stage both radio plays, All That Fall and Embers, the answer was a firm ‘No’. The same went, in 1969, when Sir Laurence Olivier and his wife visited him to persuade him to allow them to produce a version at the National Theatre. “They had refused to accept his written refusals and made the trip anyway. There he greeted them with politeness and offered limited hospitality, but remained steadfast in his decision.” THE DISSOLUTION OF DOMINIC BOOT This was Tom Stoppard’s first radio play, written for a BBC series called Just Before Midnight. Stoppard thinks he wrote it in a single day. It was first broadcast on February 20th, 1964 and was later expanded and adapted for television as The Engagement in 1970 starring David Warner. IF YOU’RE GLAD I’LL BE FRANK This was first broadcast on the Third Programme on February 8th, 1966 and starred Timothy West and Patsy Rowlands. It was also adapted for the stage with its first London performance at the Young Vic in 1976 (with The Real Inspector Hound). We are presenting these as radio plays with on stage sound effects so we ask you to imagine that you are in the Radio Theatre at Broadcasting House, home to such legendary productions as “Journey into Space”, “Dick Barton, Special Agent” and “Round the Horne” |
